Codes, standards and certifications

these can seem like a complex minefield of information. We've tried to keep it simple and explain what they mean and what's relevant to ndt

Codes, Standards and Certifications
Industry has an ongoing need for NDT technologies and techniques that can accurately locate, quantify, characterise and size flaws in a wide variety of materials, components and structures.
With every technology in use, industry has a responsibility to employ trained, competent and qualified staff to operate NDT technologies in order to use them safely and accurately. In many industrial sectors, qualification and recognised certification is enforced by law or by the associated applied codes and standards. These may vary depending on the country the NDT tests and inspections are being carried out in. Some countries have more than one body regulating codes and standards, and they can be private industry bodies or government bodies, and are referred to as National Standards Bodies (NSBs). Click here to find a list of National Standards Bodies. Personnel carrying out NDT tests should be qualified and certified according to these standards, and recognition of that is achieved by personnel certification. This can be employer specific certification or independent third party certifications. Normally employer specific certification is only valid whilst the personnel stays in that particular employment. Third party certification is often transferable, recognised internationally and remains with the personnel for a set period of time.

Certification should be according to ISO’s standard ISO 9712, 2005 (3rd Edition) ‘Non-destructive testing – Qualification and certification of personnel,’ the international standard for personnel certification, and certification awarding bodies should be accredited to ISO/IEC 17024, 2012 ‘Conformity assessment -- General requirements for bodies operating certification of persons,’
ISO, The ‘International Organization for Standardization’ is an independent, non-governmental international organization with a membership of 162 national standards bodies. Through its members, it brings together experts to share knowledge and develop voluntary, consensus-based, market relevant International Standards.

Personnel Certification Schemes compliant to ISO 9712 include:
ACCP: The ASNT Central Certification Program
CSWIP: Certification Scheme for Personnel
PCN: Personnel Certification for Non-destructive Testing
